Consortium promotes package safety for medications



October 15, 2008 - Major pharmaceutical companies join forces in Consortium for the Advancement of Patient Safety (CAPS), Boston, MA, to reduce medication errors, prevent counterfeiting. Group wants to fight revision of USP General Chapter 1, Injections, Labeling on Ferrules and Cap Overseals by United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), Rockville, MD. Due for adoption by May 2010, revision would limit printing on ferrules, cap overseals to cautionary statements. Manufacturers currently use ferrule, cap overseal as platform for anticounterfeiting technology, believe that display of dosage, cold-chain management or point-of-use instructions can enhance patient safety.
