Bottle making/filling line expands dairy’s ESL capacity

October 13, 2008 - Sensofill FMm Combi Ultra line from Sidel, Inc., Norcross, GA, helps dairy meet growing demand for extended-shelf-life (ESL) milk, flavored milk, coffee creamer. Installation of Combi bottle blowmolding/filling line makes Byrne Dairy, Syracuse, NY, first US user of Predis dry preform decontamination system from Sidel Group, which is headquartered in Clichy la Garenne, France. System sterilizes preforms with hydrogen peroxide, which then proceed directly to blowmolding, filling stations without chance of recontamination. “We initially evaluated aseptic and conventional ESL filling technologies, but found them cost prohibitive,” recalls Carl Byrne, president of Byrne Dairy. “Package weight and waste water generated also made the solutions less sustainable than we had hoped,” he adds. Sidel line operates at up to 300 bottles/minute, produces lightweight, recyclable polyethylene terephthalate bottles, ESL product while eliminating empty bottle handling, waste water. Bottle sizes include 8, 12, 32, 64 ounces.
