World’s first resealable bevcan wins recognition

First commercially available resealable bevcan wins top prize in 2008 Cans of the Year Awards competition organized by The Canmaker magazine, Crawley, UK. Can for Burn energy drink from Coca-Cola France, Issy les Moulineaux, France, debuts in 2008 after five years of development effort, successful market tests with other products in Germany, Channel Islands [PMU, 7 April 2008]. Ball Resealable End (BRE) on 500-millilitre can from Ball Packaging Europe, Ratingen, Germany, prevents contents from spilling after opening, maintains carbonation. Can also wins Gold Award in Two-Piece Beverage Cans category, Silver Award in Ends, Caps, and Closures category. “We’ve been waiting for years to see the commercial application of a resealable lid on a drinks can so the BRE end from Ball is a worthy winner of the Can of the Year,” says John Nutting, editorial director of The Canmaker, adding, “Making a success of a product like this is a huge undertaking, requiring not just innovative design but the use of highly sophisticated manufacturing techniques requiring unprecedented quality control. It also must meet Coca-Cola’s stringent requirements that enable the BRE to be used within its high-speed filling operations.
