Kraft funds recycling effort for drink pouches, cookie wrappers

July 31, 2008 - Used packaging from Nabisco cookies, pouched beverages made by Kraft Foods, Inc., Northfield, IL, serve as raw material for TerraCycle, Inc., Trenton, NJ. After cleaning, TerraCycle “upcycles” pouches, wrappers into products like tote bags, backpacks, pencil cases, lunch bags, homework folders. Collection effort for empty Capri Sun, Kool Aid drink pouches expands TerraCycle’s grassroots recycling program for drink pouches, which began in 2007 with pouches for Honest Kids organic juice drinks from Honest Tea, Bethesda, MD, a program co-sponsor. To participate, consumers join Drink Pouch Brigade, receive prepaid UPS collection bag, collect 100 pouches (rinsed with hot water), drop-off filled bag at UPS. Capri Sun/Honest Tea donate $0.02/Capri Sun, Kool Aid or Honest Kids pouch to charity of collector’s choice, $0.01/pouch for other brands. Kraft, Honest Tea also pick up tab for shipping pouches, wrappers to TerraCycle. Cookie Wrapper Brigade works similarly with prepaid bags that hold at least 50 wrappers from Nabisco cookies such as Oreos, Chips Ahoy!, Nutter Butter, Fig Newtons.
