FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PMMI & U.S. DEPT. OF COMMERCE STRENGTHEN GLOBAL PACKAGING COMMERCE AT PACK EXPO
Export Pavilion, International Business Center attract buyers from 20+ countries

Arlington, Va.; Oct. 1, 2008 — The U.S. Department of Commerce’s (DOC) Commercial Service will host the U.S. Export Pavilion at PACK EXPO International 2008 (McCormick Place, Chicago; Nov. 9–13), one in a series of tactics designed to support sales and packaging innovation in today’s global economy. The Export Pavilion (North Hall, Booth 4528) has been an important feature of PACK EXPO International since 2004, playing a strong role in growing export sales for U.S.-based companies.

In recent years, purchases of U.S.-manufactured equipment by overseas buyers has grown. In fact, export sales of packaging machinery grew 17.8 percent in 2007 to $1.159 billion. This is the sixth year in a row that packaging machinery exports have grown and eclipsed the $1 billion mark, according to PMMI’s 2008 Shipments & Outlook Study.

"The presence and support of the U.S. Department of Commerce in today’s global business climate is a crucial element of success for U.S.-based packaging suppliers looking to grow exports,” said Charles D. Yuska, president and CEO of PMMI. “The Export Pavilion will provide PACK EXPO exhibitors and attendees the opportunity to research new markets, find buyers and distributors, finance sales and understand emerging trade regulations.”

Global competition will play a major role in the packaging machinery marketplace, and the U.S. Export Pavilion will provide a number of ways to help exhibitors and attendees increase international sales. The Pavilion will include:

  • Market research from the major packaging sectors
  • Trade specialists who can discuss international opportunities
  • Match making services to connect buyers and distributors
  • Information on complying with export regulations
  • Information about financing for international buyers through the Export-Import Bank of the United States

In addition to the Export Pavilion at PACK EXPO International, PMMI is a participant in the Department of Commerce’s International Buyer Program.

The IBP facilitates global trade by promoting specific industries to consulates throughout the world. PACK EXPO International is the exclusive packaging tradeshow that the Dept. of Commerce will promote through its network of consulates. As part of the program, the U.S. Commercial Service will bring delegations of buyers and senior government officials from more than 20 participating countries to PACK EXPO including: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Gambia, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine and Uruguay.

“We live in a global environment, and the support we get from the DOC’s International Buyer Program, its trade specialists and the financing experts within the Export-Import Bank of the United States is critical to facilitating global trade,” Yuska said. “We appreciate the support that the programs the Department of Commerce oversees provides to companies looking to increase sales."
