BARRIER PLUS WRAPS – THE NEW GENERATION OF HOT DRINK CUPS

Milwaukee, WI, November 7, 2008 – Not long ago consumers had a choice of regular or decaf coffee in either a paper or foam cup. Today the range of choices in coffee cups has expanded to match the vast array of hot drink items available.

As the hot drink cup industry continues to expand, landmark cup solutions are hitting the market to address the unique needs of consumers, retailers and our environment. Multinational cup producers including Hutamaki, Georgia-Pacific, and International Paper, among others, are introducing innovative new products that offer more advantages than the standard single-ply cup or cup-and-sleeve alternatives. Many of the latest introductions use a new cost-efficient, insulated wrap technology. The insulated overwrap eliminates the need for double cupping or separate sleeves, yet provides multi-ply insulation opportunities.

Overwrap options are as varied as the markets they serve.  In Asia, embossed overwraps are used to serve the hot drink market and the noodle cup market.  For these applications, an overwrap machine embosses the overwrap to add thermal barrier, strength and rigidity to cups formed from thin paper calipers.  In Europe, preprinted corrugated blanks are overwrapped around cups to provide the thermal barrier properties of sleeves with their own unique decorative features.  And in the US, some converters wrap paper sleeves around foam cups to combine the thermal properties of foam with the graphic opportunities of paper.

Huhtamaki launched a multilayer hot beverage cup that takes the overwrap to a new level. The triple-wall paper hot cup provides convenience and comfort for on-the-go hot beverage drinkers and offers an attractive, contemporary look for gourmet coffee shops and fast food restaurants alike. This unique cup uses an insulating liner and decorative overwrap combination. The triple-wall solution provides superior insulation against heat and allows for vibrant graphic printing on the micro-flute corrugated material.

Georgia Pacific introduced the EcoSmart® Insulair cups to the market as the first insulated paper cup made with post-consumer recycled fiber. This triple-wall cup is designed with a corrugated middle layer that is 99% post-consumer recycled paper and a smooth outer layer that enables sharp, vivid graphic printing. This overwrap cup is made for the hot drink connoisseur with its sturdy construction, comfortable thermal insulation, and high quality graphics.

The overwrap solutions address sustainability from the manufacturing process to the recyclability of the cups themselves. They offer consumers a comfortable, attractive, disposable drink cup. And they deliver a cost-effective insulated cup alternative to retail and service industries.

The variety of overwrap cups on the market is impressive, but the future of overwrap cups is practically unlimited. Paper Machinery Corporation can address this new trend with its adaptable line of OW800 insulated overwrap machines. The OW800 machines wrap and seal printed blanks around cups and containers efficiently and cost-effectively.

The OW800 machines can wrap single sheet, micro flute or embossed materials over paper, plastic or foam cups. Machine options include dual in-feeds to accommodate triple-wall applications and an on-machine embossing station. Mike Kazmierski, VP Cups Division, stated, “Paper Machinery Corporation has enjoyed business as a result of the differentiating of the coffee cup market. Our philosophy is to keep an open mind: if you have a cup design approach you’d like to try, we’ll design a machine to make it.”

Hot drink cups are big business. American consumers use more than 15 billion paper hot cups a year and that figure is expected to grow to 23 billion by 2010. With staggering numbers like these the future of the hot cup industry is vitally important both from an economic and environmental standpoint. The insulated overwrap cup takes steps to address both and the OW800 overwrap line of machinery from Paper Machinery Corporation is positioned to accommodate a wide variety of overwrap designs.
