Paper Machinery Corporation Provides Dashboard Dining Solutions With The New Barrier Plus Packaging Family

Friday, October 11, 2002

Paper Machinery Corporation, the global leader in innovative technology in the design and manufacturing of paper cup and paperboard container machines, today announced its new Barrier Plus™ packaging series. The new packaging line addresses the Dashboard Dining revolution, offering consumers effective meal-on-the-go packages.

The Barrier Plus family of products offers three distinctly different packages suited especially to on-the-go eaters:

    • A paperboard cup with an embossed, printed wrap that makes hot liquids easier to hold.
    • A printed paperboard sleeve wrapped around a plastic cup that offers superior freshness protection properties.
    • A lenticular or holographic sleeve wrapped around a paper cup or plastic container to dramatically heighten its visual appeal.

According to Jerry Meier, PMC vice president, “Our standard paperboard cups and canisters have been responding to the growth in the ‘To Go’ market for years.” He continues, “However, consumers are now looking for more ways to improve the ease and satisfaction of eating on the go. Products like Barrier Plus add the product protection, reliability and appearance that consumers are looking for.”

PMC’s Barrier Plus addresses thermal transfer for hot foods with the new OW overwrapping machine. Foam cups work for the US market, but a Chinese ban on foam creates a need for a new global solution. The OW800 decreases the caliper of the basic paperboard cup, forms it from a web, wraps printed/embossed paperboard around the cup and adheres the sleeve to the main cup with a hot melt adhesive, producing at speeds up to 155 cpm.

To develop a superior Barrier Plus solution that provides effective moisture and gas barriers for product freshness, PMC has entered into a collaborative agreement with PBM Plastics. PBM has developed melt phase, deep-draw thermoforming technology for thin wall containers ranging from LDPE to nylon. The cost-effective thin wall cup forms a consistent barrier throughout the container, and is joined to an external paperboard sleeve by PMC’s OW 800 machine. The paperboard wrap provides both structural rigidity for the container and a superior printing medium in the paperboard wrap. In addition, die cuts in the paperboard sleeve can easily create a window to highlight product contents.

Additionally, Barrier Plus has the ability to surround a paperboard or plastic container with a wrap of dramatic lenticular or holographic printing. PMC has entered into a product and marketing agreement for this aspect of Barrier Plus with National Graphics Corporation to enhance the perceived value of containers.

“The possibilities for creating exciting package designs is practically unlimited,” Meier stated. “That’s particularly important with Dashboard Dining, when the food is eaten out of the container it’s sold in. They’re staring at your package design while they eat...it’s a tremendous opportunity to make a lasting impression.”
