NEW PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY DESIGNED TO INHIBIT THERMAL TRANSFER

Paper Machinery Corporation and MicroGREEN Polymers team up to introduce a cost effective, environmentally sound package designed to address thermal considerations of the food industry

Milwaukee, WI, November 7, 2008 – Recently there has been a range of new developments in the coffee cup market to inhibit thermal transfer.  Many of the options use the insulating value of air between layers of materials.

Thermal transfer issues in food products are more complicated.  First, the container must preserve and protect the product through distribution.  Secondly, the printing on the container must help sell the product to the consumer at retail, and thirdly, there is a high probability that a microwave oven will be used for heating.  This limits the package options.

At Pack Expo 2008, Paper Machinery Corporation will present a unique package that addresses all these issues using Barrier Plus Wrap technology and new wrap material that is lithographically printed for high-resolution reproduction. MicroGREEN Polymers manufactures the material.  It is rPET material made from recycled water bottles that is then expanded through a revolutionary microcellular expansion technology that controls expansion of solid-state polymer throughout the structure.  This creates a smooth surface for printing and the vast quantity of microscopic cells increases thermal resistance and increases yield. MicroGREEN material is environmentally supportive, is cost effective, and inhibits thermal transfer.

A primary container can be either paperboard or plastic.  It is then wrapped, and because of the wrap, the primary container can be formed with a thinner material than if used alone. Yield of the wrap also has a positive impact on cost effectiveness.

The Barrier Plus Wrap containers are made on an OW 800 machine at speeds up to 150 cpm. The samples at Pack Expo are side seam sealed with hot melt adhesive.  The MicroGREEN material can also be heat-sealed.

Paper Machinery Corporation is currently working on the development of a primary container from MicroGREEN material.
