Packaging Case Study 2

We like OEM's. Some of our best friends are OEM's. But sometimes, even with the best equipment builders, ideas get overlooked and result in problems left for the end user to deal with. Some problems take years to show up but are problems nonetheless.

Omni feels that new and innovative ideas grow from a collaborative effort with all parties involved. We have partnered with numerous end users to solve problems that were not anticipated when the equipment was delivered, or that prevented the equipment from operating at an optimal level.

Problem
One such occasion was with a company that needed to transfer a pouched product into a box on a vertical cartoner. The equipment had been in place for many years and was performing as originally specified, but the demand for the product required the equipment to run faster. Unfortunately some of the components weren't really sized for the increased load.

Solution & Benefits Our engineers were set into action to find out how to speed up this machine. The obvious component that limited the equipment performance was the tilt tray that supported the pouch. This one tray was made of sheet metal and comprised of 8 fabricated and machined components made of bronze and steel. The weight of this tray was "holding up the line," so to speak. The inventiveness of our engineers made it possible to design and produce a single molded tray that was 1/2 the weight of the original piece, thereby replacing all 8 components of the original design with a single, one-piece design.

Results
Omni didn't stop at just fixing the problem. We took it one step further. With molded parts, we are able to use state-of-the art additives for detection by metal detectors should any tray material contaminate the material. This additive is molded right in - no components.

This weight reduction was the answer, and was accomplished through dedication and teamwork.
