NORDSON ADHESIVE SYSTEM FOR BAG FORMING AND SEALING

DULUTH, Georgia – November 3, 2002 – Nordson Corporation (Nasdaq –NDSN) will display a hot melt and cold adhesive system used for bag forming and sealing at the PMMI Pack Expo 2002 trade show in Chicago, IL, November 3-7, 2002 in booth S 847. In bag form, fill and seal operations, sensitive products like sugar, salt, starch, instant products and powdered milk often require an inner plastic or paper bag to protect the product from moisture or odors that might penetrate the outer cardboard box or container. Cold Glue Application Inner bags have a longitudinal side seam and a bottom seam that are glued prior to the filling operation. The Nordson system uses a patented Chameleon™ slot gun with Nordson LA 710 modules to apply cold adhesive to side and bottom seams, replacing traditional roll-coating or wheel-coating systems. A high-pressure piston pump delivers the cold adhesive directly from a sealed glue reservoir to the dispensing gun without exposure to ambient air. This closed system eliminates the potential for adhesive contamination and glue drying or crusting on adhesive wheels and other components between production breaks or shifts. The non-contact slot gun delivers superior seam sealing with precise, repeatable adhesive deposition and sharp adhesive cutoff. The uneven application, glue slinging, and the downtime required for maintenance and clean-up common with wheel application systems are eliminated. The need to clean wheel pots and dispose of adhesive-contaminated cleaning wastewater is also eliminated, reducing adhesive costs, labor costs and environmental concerns. Adhesive patterns for different product lots or different-sized products are made quickly and easily by changing the mouthpiece on the slot gun and selecting from up to 50 programs that can be stored on the Nordson EPC-30 pattern control. Hot Melt Adhesive Application After the inner bag is formed and filled, a Nordson hot melt adhesive system fixes and seals the inner bag and outer package using a Nordson ProBlue™ melter and Nordson H-400 multi-module guns. ProBlue melters are available in a range of tank sizes, melt and throughput rates to meet specific application needs. Series H-400 guns are available in a variety of single and multi-module configurations to meet packaging requirements.
