The Model SOM-10N is designed to deliver speed and high efficiency for overwrap packaging applications. The Servo Overwrapping System incorporates many of the benefits learned from years of success in the most difficult multi-item kits packaging, while embracing the range of the classic overwrap design, for a whole new world of application.

The system is ideal for installations requiring frequent change-over, with a wide range of product variations. For example, with the one style SOM wrapper a medical contract packager could be wrapping a tongue depressor in the morning with paper film laminate, using a cross hatch fin seal, inline crimp pattern, and modular lug-style infeed conveyor. They could change over in the afternoon to packaging oral care swabs in pre-printed polypropylene film, with registration. The night shift could then change over within a short time, set up with a belt-style infeed for foil/film laminate packaging of wet wipes.

Fast efficient change over is made possible with state-of-the-art electronic features and modular construction. Over 100 recipes for touch screen retrieval make product changeover as easy as selecting your favorite TV channel. The SOM-10N will accommodate hi/lo polyethylene film, polypropylene, paper/film and many other laminates from 0.65 mil up to 2 mil. Film width may be from 5 inches to 12 inches, depending on the item being wrapped. The powered unwind option allows the use of thin, delicate film, keeping film tension at a minimum, while providing reliable operation. The low tension allows gentle handling of delicate product packaging. Each fin wheel is modular, with connect and snap for all of the various options for the fin seal pattern. The modular, quick-disconnect conveyor construction not only allows easy movement, but also provides the ability to change the conveyor style for different applications and product items.

Production throughput increases as the communication-friendly controller provides complete line supervision. Product position monitoring for out-of-position no-cut is another new electronic feature that means more good packages. This electronic positioning surveillance reduces wear and tear on the machine, and makes sure the product to be wrapped is in position for the seal and cut. Package QC options ensure good packages. Preprinted film registration, with correction in both directions, provides high accuracy and more good packages out the door. Each fin wheel has an individual servo drive and motor, allowing programmable film draw for precision tension and tracking control. The tension on the film between the two fin wheels is adjustable through a simple control panel setting. The crimper head and knife settings are made with built-in adjustments without shims, and while hot.

Maintenance planning and control is made easy with additional electronics for on-screen preventive maintenance flag and a maintenance scheduling window showing the work needed. The system not only monitors itself but also all auxiliary machines as well. Line diagnostics report exactly where a problem occurs saving troubleshooting time. Coupled with the modular mechanical design and easy access features, it is easy to keep your machine at top performance.

The SOM-10N Servo Overwrap Machine from George Gordon Associates (GGA) provides state-of-the-art electronics that enable complete control of both production and maintenance. An optional fast Ethernet interface provides connection to the Internet through TCP/IP for remote maintenance, e-mail and monitoring, plant networking, and remote Internet diagnostic support from GGA.
