SCA Americas' Headquarters is the Largest Space in Pennsylvania Receives High Honors in Green Building from the US Green Building from the US Green Building Council

For Immediate Release

The United States Green Building Council (USBC) announced that SCA Americas' headquarters has been certified as a LEED-CI Gold interior space. SCA, a $13 billon Swedish-based company offering hygiene products, packaging solutions and publication papers, joins EwingCole, a national architecture, engineering, interior design and planning firm responsible for the space, to celebrate this recognition of environmental excellence in tenant interior architecture and construction achievement in green building.

During the construction of the space, EwingCole and SCA worked closely with Turner Construction to execute more than 30 sustainable strategies to align the design and construction of the 81,200 sf space with SCA's commitment to environmentally sound business. The U.S. Green Building Council certified this design and construction project according to various levels of environmental sustainability through a program called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The SCA Americas headquarters is one of the first nationally recognized projects using the LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Rating System.

"SCA is committed to being stewards of the environment in which we work and live. We have worked hard to create an office space that supports our core values of respect, excellence and responsibility," said Thomas Wulkan, President of SCA Americas. "We are thrilled to have received this recognition from the US Green Building Council."

This distinction is just another example of the social responsibility that is woven into the fabric of SCA.

SCA Americas continues to gain recognition for its commitment to the environment throughout the company. SCA Tissue has become the first sanitary paper manufacturer in the United States with processes that meet the rigorous Environmental Choice standards of excellence in the manufacture of towel, tissue and napkin products. The division now provides an array of products that can contribute towards credits under the LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED E-B) program. The SCA mill in Flagstaff, AZ won the Governor's Prize in 2005 for water management for using reclaimed water from a nearby treatment plant to manufacture its high-quality tissue products, reducing the mills consumption of fresh water to 1/3 the industry norm for paper production. SCA Barton, AL, has won two state Pollution Prevention Achievement Awards in recognition of its environmental programs. SCA Menasha, WI, has earned kudos for converting sludge from de-inking recycled paper into fiber-clay. Nearly 100% of the sludge is channeled into constructive uses instead of landfill.

SCA is on the Dow Jones STOXX Sustainability Index, meets the FTSE4Good Environmental criteria and in 2005, SCA was classified as one of the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World", in a survey compiled by Innovest.

Because of this strong commitment to the environment, SCA collaborated with EwingCole and Francisco Laurier, head project designer, to make this project a leader in environmentally conscious design in the Philadelphia officescape. Design strategies ranged from increasing access to daylight, to recycling construction materials, to reducing water usage. Strategically located adjacent to Amtrak's 30th Street Station in the University City District of Philadelphia, the new office headquarters also boasts prime access to mass and public transportation.

"EwingCole's design of the SCA headquarters introduces new sustainable strategies to commercial interiors projects," said Jill Kowalski, LEED AP, Executive Director of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council. "SCA's commitment to sustainable design from the onset allowed EwingCole more creative opportunities, including certifying the design as a Version 2.0 project for the LEED Commercial Interiors program. This initiative design demonstrates the team's dedication to forwarding environmentally-conscious buildings."
